Google France and Google Inc face a $660,000 fine after a French court has convicted Google that the company is abusing its dominant position in mapping by making Google Maps free.As far our knowledge says that it is not first time that Google was fined and French has raised legal issues with Google.A few examples are here for our reader:-

As it is reported from The Economic Times, the French commercial court“upheld an unfair competition complaint lodged by Bottin Cartographes against Google France and its parent company Google Inc. for providing free web mapping services to some businesses.”
Bottin Cartographes provides mapping services for a cost, and its website boasts several business clients such as Louis Vuitton,Airbus and several automobile manufacturers.
The French court ruling requires Google to pay $660,000 (500,000 Euros) in damages and interest to Bottin Cartographes, along with a 15,000 Euro fine. That means Google’s total cost from the ruling is about $680,000.

“This is the end of a two-year battle,a decision without precedent,”said the lawyer for Bottin Cartographes,Jean-David Scemmama."We proved the illegality of (Google’s) strategy to remove its competitors… the court recognised the unfair and abusive character of the methods used and allocated Bottin Cartographes all it claimed. This is the first time Google has been convicted for its Google Maps application,” he said.
A Google France spokes woman says the company is still studying the court’s decision and reviewing its options, adding that Google is “convinced that a free high-quality mapping tool is beneficial for both Internet users and websites.”The spoke person added that Google did n't do so even after losing similar cases in the past in this and some other countries. She does not think Google would lose a case like this in the U.S.A.

  1. Google has played good roles in maps only a few counties .On the other hand it always tries to omit the competitors from the market.
